Viruses don’t exist as a single, fixed version inside the body. During infection, they form a constantly changing swarm of related variants created by ongoing replication errors. At any moment, one variant may dominate, but many others coexist beneath it.
Targeting a virus with a very narrow immune response—such as focusing on a single spike protein—can create evolutionary pressure.
In theory, this favors variants that can evade those antibodies, allowing the virus to adapt rather than be fully eliminated. Antibodies are powerful tools, but they are not always purely protective in every context.
