St. Philomena’s Cathedral in Mysore (officially the Cathedral of St. Joseph and St. Philomena) is one of the most iconic landmarks in India. It’s not just a place of worship; it’s a masterclass in Neo-Gothic architecture and a symbol of the secular history of the Mysore Kingdom.
🏛️ Summary of the Cathedral
The church is one of the tallest in Asia and was inspired by the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. Its twin spires rise to a height of 175 feet, dominating the Mysore skyline. While the exterior looks like it belongs in medieval Europe, the foundation of the church represents a deep bond between the Catholic community and the Hindu Maharajas of Mysore.
Key Features at a Glance:
Architectural Style: Neo-Gothic (characterized by pointed arches and ribbed vaults).
Floor Plan: Designed in the shape of a Holy Cross.
Capacity: The main hall (nave) can hold up to 800 people.
Unique Highlight: The stained-glass windows, which were specially imported from France, depicting scenes from the life of Christ.
📜 Historical Journey
1. The Humble Beginnings (1843)
Long before the grand stone cathedral existed, a small church was built on the site in 1843. It was constructed primarily to serve the British officers and the small Christian population in Mysore. At the time, Maharaja Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar III sanctioned the land for the building.
2. The Vision of the Relics (1926)
The transformation into the current cathedral began because of St. Philomena, a 3rd-century Greek princess and martyr. In 1926, Thumboo Chetty (the Dewan of Mysore) obtained a relic of the Saint from Peter Pisani, Apostolic Delegate of the East Indies. This relic is still preserved in a catacomb below the main altar.
3. Construction and the Maharaja’s Support (1933–1941)
The "new" cathedral was commissioned by Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, who was known for his progressive and inclusive rule.
Architect: It was designed by a French architect named Daly.
Foundation: The Maharaja himself laid the foundation stone on October 28, 1933.
Completion: The structure was completed in 1941, though it has undergone several massive restorations since then to preserve the lime mortar and stone.
⛪ Interior and The Catacomb
The interior is just as impressive as the spires. The altar holds the statue of St. Philomena, but the real draw for many is the underground catacomb. Visitors can descend into this space to see the relic and the tomb of the saint, creating a somber, reflective atmosphere away from the bustling city outside.
Note for Visitors: While the cathedral is a major tourist spot, it remains an active place of worship. It’s best to be mindful of ongoing mass services, especially on Sundays.
