As there is some curiosity and perplexity about the sound of the horn, notice that HMS Hood was commissioned in 1920 and featured an actual steam horn, that according to descriptions of the inter-war period, was quite distinctive . As far as it is known, the horn was never updated or modified. If Hood had survived the encounter with Bismark, it would most likely have a machinery replacement of newer design, and most likely a new horn with a sound similar to more recent ships like the King George V, Vanguard, North Carolina or Iowa classes.
