In our March 2005 seminar with Sensei John Kerker, the topic was Master Tatsuo Shimabuku's Kumite. Sometimes referred to as the "Secret Scrolls of Kumite," they were not really a secret. They were listed on the wall in Master Shimabuku's dojo. However, the descriptions were quite vague, so they would remain a secret if you never had them explained to you.
From my understanding, Sensei Harrill had the honor of serving as an uke when they were being taught to some of Tatsuo's Okinawan students, and he continued to practice them after returning to the US. Later, after conferring with Sensei Advincula to make sure they were both on the same page as far as what had been taught on Okinawa, Sensei Harrill began teaching them in his seminars.
These Kumite are essential in understanding Tatsuo Shimabuku's thoughts on kata and self-defense skills. They can all be found in the Isshin-ryu kata and are a critical aid when exploring bunkai and trying to understand some of the modifications Master Shimabuku made when adopting kata for his karate system.
