🚢 The RV Tangaroa has returned from a successful voyage to learn more about the Tūhua/Mayor and Whakaari/White island volcanoes.
A team of scientists from GNS Science, Victoria University of Wellington and Scripps Institute of Oceanography (USA) deployed electromagnetic receivers on the sea floor to locate magma and took seabed sediment samples to learn about the volcanoes’ eruption histories.
🌋 This data will help our scientists study the multiple natural hazards posed by these nearshore volcanoes, including their potential to generate tsunami, ashfall and pyroclastic flows of hot ash and gas.
