An explosive device injured four Palestinians on Friday outside the walled Old City of Jerusalem.

A spokesman said police were investigating all motives, including the possibility that the explosive was planted by Jewish militants.

The explosion came a day after a Palestinian was stabbed and wounded in the Jewish ultraorthodox Mea Shearim district of the city, the third such stabbing there in recent days.

The explosion happened in the main road which runs past the walls around Jerusalem's Old City - just outside the Damascus Gate.

It is the site of a market where Palestinians sell fruit and vegetables and bread - and a popular tourist location as well.

Police closed off the area to search for more explosives - though none were found.

The four injured Palestinians were treated at the scene and then taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

The blast comes at a time of heightened tension between Israel and the Palestinians.

The West Bank has been swept by daily stone-throwing protests over the deaths of three Palestinians earlier this week at an army roadblock in the West Bank.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast - but it follows a series of stabbings of Palestinians in Mea Shearim the ultra-Orthodox Jewish part of the city - not far from the site of the bombing.
