Pernambuco wood is native to the Mata Atlântica, or the Atlantic Forest on the coast of Brazil. Its primary usage is to make bows for stringed instruments, and has been used for this purpose for hundreds of years. It's always been cheap to export and nobody thought it could possibly run out.
