What is preload, and what are examples of increased and decreased preload?
Answer: Preload refers to the ventricular stretch at the end of diastole prior to contraction and is a primary determinant of stroke volume. Factors that increase preload include elevated intravascular volume, such as through blood transfusions or administration
of crystalloids. Conversely, preload may be decreased by conditions such as hypovolemia or aggressive fluid loss.
