"A professional woman of the Regency era: the career of Mrs Elliston"
Speaker: Dr. Anne Daye

Description
With lockdown leisure, I have been able to uncover an unusual amount of information on that elusive species, the dance teacher, including a female teacher of dancing. Elizabeth Elliston was a dancer, dance teacher of Bath and London, a choreographer, a composer of music, a publisher and a wife and mother. She can also be placed in a lineage of female dancing teachers stretching from 1745 to the 1870s. The narrative of her life and work will raise questions about the profile of professional women in a man’s world.
Dr. Anne Daye
Dr. Anne Daye is a dance historian who teaches, lectures and publishes widely. Formerly Chairman, she is now Director of Education and Research for the Historical Dance Society. Her special field is the Tudor and Stuart masque in the context of Renaissance dance in France, Italy and Britain. This talk arises from current research into dancing in the age of Jane Austen.
