A fabulous day trip to Lifou Island! The Snorkelling here is the best I have ever seen! The aqua water and lush grounds is truly a magical place with mesmerizing views.
Lifou Island also known as Drehu in the local language, is the largest and most important island of the Loyalty Islands, in the archipelago of New Caledonia an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. The Island is located east of Australia. Frenchman Dumont d’Urville the first European sighted the Island in 1857 and soon after was visited by whalers and traders. The island became a destination for Protestant and Catholic missionaries.
In 1864 the French established the Island as an Aboriginal Reserve as it was not believed suitable for extensive colonialization. The natives on the island are people descending from Melanesians and Polynesians. The marine life of fish, crab, lobster and turtle are in abundance. There are domesticated animals such as goat, pig and chicken. The Fruit grown are coconut, banana, taro, sweet potato, yam and vanilla. The Island is a former coral atoll and was part of a submerged volcano around 2 million years ago. There are no rivers on Lifou, the water comes from rain that seeps through the soil which forms freshwater ponds.
