Snowies Alpine Walk - Hiking the Rooftop of Australia!

Описание: We hiked the four day Snowies Alpine Walk Track in the Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales 16th January 2025. The Snowies Alpine Walk is a 56km trek through the top of Australia between the alpine villages of Guthega, Charlotte Pass, Perisher and Bullocks Flat, or continue on to Thredbo via the Thredbo River Track. Highlights of the Main Range Track include: Summiting the tallest mountain in Australia – Mt Kosciuszko. Glacier carved lakes and landscapes, snow gum forests and colourful alpine wildflowers.

The track: The full route is 56km with roughly 1,800m elevation gain and ranges between 18-23 hours. The route is made up of a mix of elevated boardwalks, rock paths and dirt paths.
Each day is broken into the following distances and elevations and times:

Day 1. Guthega to Charlotte Pass. 9 km 407m gain. 2.5 - 3 hours
Day 2. Main Range Track. 22km loop. 850m gain. Est time 7 - 9 hours
Day 3. Charlotte Pass to Perisher Valley 12.7km 397m gain. 4 - 6 hours.
Day 4. Perisher Valley to Bullocks Flat 12km. 133m gain. 4 - 5 hours.

Accommodation: This walk can be planned in several ways varying in cost and comfort. Most convenient would be to arrange a transfer to the start of the track and book accommodation in each of the alpine villages. You could have accommodation in one place and arrange transfers each day. Car shuffling is an alternative, which we did, however note that this can add up to a lot of Park entry fees if you don’t have an annual pass. Currently this is $17 per vehicle per 24 hour period.
There are no campgrounds with facilities available along this walk, but for the adventurous, wild camping is an option, with ideal locations being near the Blue Lake or Mt Townsend on the Main Range Track, near Porcupine Rocks near Perisher and you can camp down on the campgrounds along the Thredbo Valley River.

Weather: The weather was very unpredictable and could change very quickly in this area. By sheer luck we didn’t walk through rain or snow, however we did have strong wind on day 3. Day 1 and 4 we had hot weather and had a dip in the rivers, but day 2 was cold and foggy until late morning. Day 3 we had icy wind most of the day. Summer is possibly the best time of year for this walk as the temperatures are at their highest and there are plenty of options for a swim. Water is abundant on most of the sections of this track.

Optional: This walk could be turned into a circuit back to Charlotte Pass using the Thredbo Valley River Track and the lift at Thredbo which is open all year round.
