Become a historian in 2021? Historians study past events to understand the present condition of society. Included in this field's scope are cultures, trends, traditions, events, and natural disasters, among others.
The information that they gain through analyzing the past is documented so people from different generations, including the future generations, can be aware of it. I'm going the answer these questions to help you decide if being a historian is right for you:
What is the average salary of a historian?
What is the job market like for historians? Would it be hard for you to get a job?
Would this occupation be compatible with your personality and interests?
What kind of education do you need to become a historian?
Let's get started.
The past holds much information that can help the people in the present society avoid making bad decisions. Let's take the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 as an example. Even though it ended World War I, it was at the same time one of the causes of World War II. The peacemaking outcome didn't put the other party in a good place, which led to that party's resentment that resulted in a war.
If no one knew about that, no one would know the importance of compromise and meet halfway. More than that, however, if the existence of wars in the past weren't brought to light, then countries of today wouldn't know how to prevent one.
If you want to earn more than $100,000 annually, being a historian isn't the right profession for you. In 2019, historians earned $68,690, which was just $2,930 more than survey researchers.
There aren't a lot of historians in the United States. In 2019, there were 3,040 of them. There were just 410 more sociologists and 1,640 more than geographers.
Based on the data from the Occupational Information Network, among the historians:
20% has a bachelor's degree
24% has a master's degree
56% of them took further studies after getting their master's degree.
Being a historian is one of the knowledge-based professions rather than skills-based, so if you want to be perceived as an expert, you have to have a strong educational background.
