Parts 3A and 3B cover the four nights we stayed at El Questro on the eastern end of the Gibb River Road in Western Australia. Part 3A covers the 4x4 tracks we explored (Saddle Back Ridge, Pigeon Hole Billabong and lookout, Branco’s Lookout and Explosion Gorge). In Part 3B we explore Amalia Gorge and Emma Gorge.
From 29 April 2021 to 29 June 2021 we travelled 11 600 km from Brisbane to the Kimberleys and back towing a 2008 Ultimate Camper trailer behind a 2005 V6 petrol Prado. The distance included 2300 km of unsealed roads and off-road. The Prado consumed 2373 litres of petrol at a total cost of $3726. The average fuel consumption was 20.5 litres per 100 km. The total other costs (camping, food, drinks etc.) came to $3664. The car and camper trailer are fitted with BF Goodrich KO2 all terrain tyres. Tyre pressures on sealed roads were 40 psi front and on the trailer while the back wheels were 45 psi (due to the higher load). On unsealed roads the tyre pressures were dropped to 28 psi front and on the trailer while the back wheels were 33 psi. When driving on deep, soft sand, we drop tyre pressures to 16 in the front and 18 – 20 psi in the back. The lower tyre pressures provides for better road holding (grip), a more comfortable ride and protects the car on rough dirt roads. So far we have never experienced any tyre damage or punctures (215 000 km on the Prado’s odometer in July 2021).
