Eric Dane, Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria star, dies aged 53.
Eric Dane, the American actor best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has sadly passed away at the age of 53. He died on Thursday, February 19, 2026 — just 10 months after publicly revealing his diagnosis with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a form of motor neurone disease.
The actor's family confirmed the heartbreaking news in a written statement that read: "With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
The Grey's Anatomy star first announced his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, describing the long and exhausting journey to get answers. He consulted multiple specialists and underwent numerous tests before a neurologist ultimately confirmed the devastating diagnosis. In the months that followed, Dane openly documented his battle with the progressive neurodegenerative disease, sharing that he had lost the use of one arm and was gradually losing overall body strength. Commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is a nervous system disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The condition progressively worsens, leading to loss of muscle control. According to medical experts, there is currently no known cure.
In January, Dane had been scheduled to receive an award from the ALS Network for his advocacy and efforts to raise awareness, but he was forced to withdraw at the last minute as he was not well enough to attend. Instead, he appeared in a pre-recorded message. Dane famously portrayed Dr. Mark Sloan — affectionately known as “McSteamy” — on Grey's Anatomy. Originally signed for just one episode, his character quickly became a fan favorite, leading him to become a series regular for six seasons. He appeared in 145 episodes between 2006 and 2021.
Most recently, he played Cal Jacobs on the HBO drama Euphoria, portraying the complex father of Nate Jacobs. Dane had already completed filming for the upcoming third season of the series, performing many of his scenes in a wheelchair due to his declining health.
He made his on-screen debut in a 1991 episode of Saved by the Bell and went on to appear in series such as The Wonder Years, Married... with Children, Charmed, Roseanne, and Gideon's Crossing before landing his breakout role.
Beyond television, Dane appeared in films including X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, Valentine's Day, Burlesque, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
Eric Dane is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine.
May his soul rest in peace.
