USA: BLACK ACTIVIST KWAME TURE DIES AGED 57

Black rights activist Kwame Ture has died at the age of 57 in the West African country of Guinea.

Ture, who was once known as Stokely Carmichael, made the phrase "black power" a rallying cry of the civil rights upheavals of the 1960s.

Ture's politics stretched from the landmark freedom rides to the pinnacle of the Black Panther Party and finally to resolute Pan Africanism.

Ture was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1996.

As the young Stokely Carmichael, Ture was among the most fiery and visible leaders of black militancy in the United States in the 1960s.

Ture's political activism saw him head the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.

But after the assassination of Martin Luther King he declared war on white America and called on blacks to take up arms.

"When white America killed Doctor King last night she opened the eyes of every black man in this country. When white America got rid of Marcus Garvey she did it and she said he was an extremist, he was crazy. When they got rid of brother Malcolm X they said he was preaching hate, he deserved what he got. But when they got rid of brother Martin Luther King they had absolutely no reason to do so. He was the one man in our race who was trying to teach our people to have love, compassion and mercy for what white people had done. When white America killed Doctor King last night, she declared war on us. There will be no crying, there will be no funerals. The rebellions that have been occurring around the cities of this country is just light stuff to what is about to happen, We have to retaliate for the death of our leaders. The execution of those deaths will not be in the courtrooms, They are going to be in the streets of the United States of America. When white America killed Doctor King last night, she mad it a whole lot easier for a whole lot of black people today. There no longer needs to be intellectual discussions. Black people know that they have to get guns. White America will live to cry that she killed Doctor King last night. It would have been better if she had killed Rag Brown, and/or Stokely Carmichael, But when she killed Doctor King, she lost."

He later became prime minister of the Black Panther Party.

Ture cut his ties with the American civil rights groups over the issue of allying themselves with white radicals and moved to Guinea in 1969.

He made the West African nation his home and stayed there until his death.

A self-described socialist, he was treated in Cuba and received
financial help for his treatment from Nation of Islam leader Louis
Farrakhan.

With a new name taken from the African leaders Kwame Nkrumah and Ahmed Sekou Toure, he organized the All-African People's Revolutionary Party.

For the rest of his life, both overseas and in appearances before largely black audiences at U-S colleges, he continued to preach black power and champion socialism while condemning America, capitalism and Zionism.
