Childhood trauma statistics, generational trauma, and the We & KamKam project. One in five people worldwide experienced forced childhood trauma or abuse. That's 1.6 billion people carrying unhealed wounds. Drew Forman shares how he went from broken and suicidal to creating a mission-driven project helping children find safety, while Jason Plevell explains why providing safe spaces isn't enough without breaking the cycles that create trauma in the first place.
*Staggering statistics:*
400 million children experience forced trauma or abuse every single year
One in five people worldwide have experienced forced childhood trauma
Approximately 1.6 billion people on this planet carry these wounds
Numbers are growing exponentially as global population increases
*What is forced trauma vs. natural trauma:*
Natural trauma includes things kids can't control but aren't intentionally harmful: grandma passing away, losing a pet, car accidents, divorce. Forced trauma is intentional harm: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, bullying. Both require healing, but forced trauma carries additional layers of shame and fear.
*The We & KamKam project:*
Drew created We & KamKam after hiding his childhood abuse (CSA) for over 40 years. After working with Jason as his trauma coach, Drew transformed his pain into purpose. The project includes three published books, growing social media presence, free resources for caregivers and teachers, and community building without cameras to maintain trust. Every book purchase funds trauma awareness programs.
*Why schools fail children:*
Neither the US nor Europe teaches emotional regulation in schools. School psychologists exist to mitigate issues AT school, not address what's happening at home. Kids have nowhere to learn how to process emotions, so they develop unhealthy coping mechanisms that follow them into adulthood.
*The transformation:*
Jason shares his shock at seeing Drew now versus their first call. "You were so broken, Drew." Now Drew speaks with confidence and education. He went from suicidal on a rooftop to teaching others about trauma recovery.
*Why safety isn't enough:*
Sometimes trauma is familiar, so it feels "safe" to the nervous system even though it's destroying you. Providing external safety, while crucial, isn't sufficient alone. You need internal changes so trauma cycles stop being passed down through generations. Drew focuses on protecting children NOW. Jason focuses on healing adults so they don't CREATE trauma in the next generation.
ABOUT COURAGE TO BE REAL:
Real conversations about trauma, healing, and breaking the silence. We share our stories so you know you're not alone.
Drew was a tyrant in his own home because he had no tools to manage his anxiety from childhood abuse. His wife and son never knew who they'd get each morning. Jason battled with addiction and divorce, when he thought he lost everything, held a gun to his head. Drew stood on a rooftop ready to jump. They're alive today because they learned these tools and found support.
Anxiety is fear of the unknown. When trauma goes unhealed your body stays in fight or flight mode. Every uncertain situation triggers the same fear response you felt as a kid when you were actually unsafe. But you can retrain your nervous system.
