Once coexisting with ancient Egyptians, these fascinating animals are now lost to history. The North African Elephant, smaller than its relatives, was famously used in warfare but was driven to extinction by overhunting. The Atlas Bear, the only bear species native to Africa, met a similar fate due to relentless hunting. The Aurochs, massive ancestors of modern cattle, symbolized power but disappeared due to habitat loss and overexploitation. The uniquely patterned Quagga, a zebra subspecies, vanished in the 19th century after being hunted for its hide. Lastly, the Scimitar-Horned Oryx, with its striking curved horns, thrived in deserts until overhunting and desertification pushed it to extinction in the wild. These species remind us of the fragile balance between nature and human activity.
