2. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Alberto Fujimori, Former Peruvian President
(Reporter: Japan has up until now refused requests from Peru because you are a Japanese citizen, but this week you launched 'Si cumple' with the aim of re-entering Peruvian politics as a Peruvian citizen. How do you see yourself, as Peruvian or Japanese?)
"Well I repeat what I said earlier. As everyone knows, I have Japanese ancestry and as such I have a right to Japanese nationality, but obviously I have a link with Peru, and in this sense being the leader there of a whole political movement, and having founded and launched this movement 'Si cumple' from there, it is legally registered in Peru, where 'Si cumple' is said incidentally to already have a very wide support base and which is probably already the leading political force in Peru."
(Reporter: And this movement is meant as a declaration of your intention to put yourself up for the presidency of Peru one day?)
"Yes, that is always my ambition to get back into Peruvian politics. There are many Peruvians who support me because they can easily compare the achievements of my government with the achievements of other presidents."

(Reporter: Regarding the request for your extradition, would you allow this to be processed in a Japanese court or an international court?)
"Well you see, in the first place I would like to point out that I was fighting terrorism when it was at its height. It mustn't be forgotten that Shining Path and the MRTA were violent terrorist groups, the worst in the world at that time, and within that context occurred crimes, terrible crimes like these, but I have no link at all with these massacres and therefore these accusations are groundless."
(Reporter: So what you are saying then is that you are completely innocent of these charges and accusations?)
"Completely, and what strikes me as the worst thing about this extradition request is that probably all they are trying to do is prevent me from going back to Peru of my own free will, to lead the 'Si cumple' movement. Perhaps that is the real reason."
(Reporter: So you are not obliged to go in front of any court whether it be in Peru, Japan or in any other country?)
"As I said, in this 700 pages (of extradition request) there is not one single line that says that Alberto Fujimori is guilty. I am informed by experts who have studied it closely, who say 'well this document of 700 pages has no basis for any accusation'."
(Reporter: If Japan says that they are going to extradite you, even though perhaps there is no concrete evidence, but say they do extradite you, what are you going to do?)
"I don't have any information in advance."

STORYLINE:

Peruvian authorities formally asked Japan on Thursday to extradite former President Alberto Fujimori, who fled to the Asian nation more than two years ago while his scandal-ridden regime collapsed.

The Lima government wants Fujimori to face murder charges in connection with the death squad killings of political
opponents, as well as embezzlement and treason allegations.

But the extradition request applies only to the murder charges.

Japan so far has resisted any suggestion it should hand over Fujimori - because of the Japanese citizenship he was

But the formal request put pressure on Tokyo.
