For superficial to medium depth acne scars, fractional erbium laser is the best option. This laser treats the underlying condition in one pass without harming the surface of the skin. It is less painful as it prevents overheating and damaging the skin's surface. For deeper acne scars, fractional CO2 works very well. Though the downtime is more, the results are superior to other laser procedures. Because of the pixilated technology of the laser, it creates tiny dots in the skin, which are surrounded by the normal tissue. The laser treatments are performed after applying an anesthetic gel to the target area to reduce discomfort. The patients are advised to wear sunscreen religiously after the treatment to prevent any UV damage.

The patient requires multiple sessions to see some significant results. However, the number of sessions depends upon the type of scar, the severity of the scar, the number of scars, the size of the area to be treated, the type of laser technique, etc. People with active acne, more wrinkled skin and dark skin might not be an ideal candidate for the treatment. After the treatment, one can observe swelling, redness, and pain at the site, which tends to subside within a few days. The results can be observed within 7-10 days. However, the results are permanent.
