This is the eighth installment in a micro-series diving deep into my collection of very small synthesizers and samplers. Each episode will explore one little music machine. There will be no talking, just music or noise, depending on the synth in question and your personal taste in sound.
The Bastl Microgranny is the most recent addition to my tiny synth family. It is an 8-bit monophonic granular synthesizer/sampler, meaning that it can chop up samples into minuscule bits and play those bits back in different ways. It’s a really remarkable little device that can create crunchy and gritty renditions of any sound, whether uploaded to the SD card (allows 16 bit samples) or recorded directly into the line-in or microphone. It’s also able to interface with midi devices, allowing it to be played like any monophonic synth, using a midi keyboard or sequencer for control. For this demo, however, I’m going to stick with using the Microgranny as a stand-alone device to highlight its sound mangling abilities.
