In 1966, Sembène Ousmane won the Prix Jean Vigo for his film La Noire de... . This was the first real international attention given to an African film, but not the last. In this video, I'll discuss Sembène's ideas through the lens of a few of his films and why he's a filmmaker worth listening to. In this video I also pronounce several things wrong.
Slight correction: I think I said Black Girl was the first African film to receive international attention but I think that's actually wrong since Cairo Station came first. I believe it was supposed to be the first sub-Saharan African film to receive international attention.
00:00 Who was Sembène Ousmane?
02:50 Camp de Thiaroye
06:27 Xala
09:58 Moolaade (I pronounce this wrong the whole video)
