British Airways Flight 5390, a BAC One-Eleven was a flight between Birmingham and Malaga on June 10, 1990 with 87 passengers and crew on board.
The Incident:
The flight took off normally at 7:20am. At 7:33am, the flight was at about 17,000 feet and the crew began preparing breakfast when suddenly, the left windscreen separated from the aircraft and the captain was blown out of his seat and flew through the shattered windscreen leaving his whole body hanging onto the outside of aircraft with the exception of his legs which were stuck onto the flight controls. The door to the cockpit was also blown out, blocking the radio and throttle controls causing the plane to speed up while descending. This also caused the decompression to reach the cabin as well. A flight attendant latched onto the captain's legs to get him back inside the plane which was successful. At this time, the captain had suffered from bruises, frostbite and exhaustion. The flight was able to land at Southampton Airport with no deaths.
