Hand Sieving Method for Materials Sieve Analysis

The hand sieving method is a very basic test method for performing sieve analysis. Results can be subjective and may vary when this method is performed by different operators.

Hand sieving is acceptable for applications in which a high degree of accuracy and repeatability are NOT essential.

Sample Reduction and Condition
It is important to limit the quantity of test material on a sieve so that all particles have opportunity to reach sieve openings a number of times during the sieving operation.

For this demonstration the bulk sample has been reduced to an amount suitable for testing using the applicable procedures described in ASTM C702

Hand Sieving Method
Select a single test sieve with an opening required by the test method specifications. We're using Gilson 8in ASTM E11 stainless steel compliance grade test sieves.

Place the sieve on to a sieve pan. Now place the clean dry test sample into the sieve.

While holding the sieve and pan together in both hands, sieve the materials with a gentle circular motion. Still holding the sieve and pan within your hands, use your hands to repetitively tap on the size of the sieve to prevent sample blinding.

Continue sieving so that not more than 1% by weight of the materials passing through the sieve during one minute of sieving action. The 1% by weight in one minute is a common rule used in many sieving procedures and is often considered the end point of a sieve analysis test.

Now you have roughly determined the particle size distribution of the test sample.
