The Hunger That Satisfies | Matthew 5:6
In a world constantly telling us what to chase—success, status, influence, approval—Jesus offers a radically different vision of what it means to live a blessed life.
In this message, The Hunger That Satisfies, we explore Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:6:
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”
When Jesus spoke these words during the Sermon on the Mount, His audience knew what real hunger felt like. Living under Roman occupation, many experienced daily physical hunger and deep spiritual longing for God to restore His people. Yet instead of pointing them toward political victory or religious performance, Jesus pointed to something deeper—the transformation of the human heart.
This sermon unpacks what it truly means to hunger and thirst for righteousness. It’s not about appearing morally impressive or trying harder to earn God’s favor. It’s about a deep, ongoing craving for right alignment with God—one that begins with humility, grows through repentance, and ultimately finds its satisfaction in Christ.
We also explore:
• How the Beatitudes describe the character produced by grace
• The difference between positional righteousness (justification) and practical righteousness (sanctification)
• Why our spiritual appetites reveal what truly rules our hearts
• The promise Jesus makes to those who pursue righteousness
• How communion reminds us that righteousness is not achieved—it is provided through Christ
The gospel does not produce prideful achievers. It produces hungry dependents—people who know they need the righteousness only Jesus can give.
The question is not whether you are hungry.
The question is: What are you starving for?
