In this highlight from our September 2023 road trip, we take a stroll through the Barrier Island Visitor Center and catch a glimpse of the famous wild horses grazing near the Verrazano Bridge (HWY 611). While we wanted to stay and watch these beautiful animals all day, the park rangers keep traffic moving to ensure both the horses and visitors stay safe!

The Barrier Island Visitor Center: A walk out onto the scenic deck with sweeping views of the Sinepuxent Bay.
Wild Horse Sightings: Beautiful feral horses grazing in the salt marshes along the Verrazano Bridge.
Oceanside North Beach: A look at the pristine sands and blue waters of the Maryland District.
Traveler Tip: When visiting Assateague, remember to keep your distance from the horses—at least 50 feet! They may look friendly, but they are wild animals. Also, the Visitor Center is a great first stop for maps and air-conditioned exhibits before hitting the beach.
