Framed or frameless - What style of cabinets do you want?
In this episode, we will be going over the face frame and frameless style of cabinets and show and explain the difference between them. Let’s get started!
Let’s first talk about frameless cabinets, also known as European-style. The doors and drawers attach directly to the cabinet box. The look is more contemporary and interior access is easier. A lot of the time you will see the frameless cabinets covered entirely by the doors and drawer fronts (as you see here) this is known as a full overlay cabinet. The doors and drawer fronts have very minimal space between them giving the kitchen a sophisticated, clean look. Although, the lack of a face frame can compromise the overall strength of the cabinet. Better manufacturers compensate this by using a thicker box (3/4-inch plywood instead of 1/2-inch particleboard, for example). This is a really important thing to keep in mind, as you do not want to load up the cabinet and then see the shelf sag.
Next let’s go over the framed cabinet style. Also known as face frame cabinets, these basically start out as a frameless cabinet except a face frame is added to the front of the cabinet, to which the doors and drawers attach. In this type of cabinet construction, the rails and stiles form a 1-1/2 inch face "frame" at the front of the cabinet box. This frame resembles a flat picture frame that is attached to the door front, giving added dimension to the door front. In framed cabinetry, the cabinet doors are secured to the frame, which gives the cabinet strength and sturdiness. Framed cabinets attach the door hinges to the frame face and shelves, and are usually adjustable. Partial and full overlay, as well as inset cabinet doors, can be used with framed cabinets, giving you many design possibilities for creating a customized look for your cabinetry.
If you want the European full overlay look but also want the added strength of a face framed cabinet, I would recommend choosing a face frame cabinet with compact door hinges. These type of hinges come in a variety of overlays that cover most if not all of the face frame. Therefore achieving the frameless look but the added strength of a face frame cabinet.
Another look that you can achieve with both the face frame and frameless options is inset. Going with this option is very popular for someone looking for a more elegant, furniture look. The door is either set back flush inside the face frame as you see here or the door is set inside the box for the frameless option. Inset is one of my personal favorite looks. A few things to keep in mind here is that inset cabinets typically cost a little more because of the precise door openings and skill involved in making everything perfect. Also since the cabinet door is set back inside the frame, you may want to get slightly deeper cabinets, particularly the upper cabinets to make up for that loss of 3/4 of an inch from the inset door thickness.
Strength & Durability
The reason that a frame is used on a cabinet is to give it support and strength. Unfortunately, this sometimes means that the cabinet itself may be constructed of weaker or thinner materials, but this is not always the case. Sometimes, a framed cabinet may be composed of ¾-inch plywood and have a frame. This is a manufacturer’s option, and with a heavier, thicker cabinet, the price increases.
