After Bryce Harper took a first-pitch sinker from Cabrera for a HBP that caused Harper to leave the game with a head injury, ensuing batter Didi Gregorius was also hit by a first pitch offering from Cabrera.
Because the crew deemed the pitches unintentional (Cabrera was wild and not in control, but did not intend to hit Harper and Gregorius), they issued warnings to prevent further escalation (an ejection for throwing at the batter requires intent, but warnings do not require an intentional HBP), leading Girardi to argue that Cabrera should have been ejected.
Cabrera remained in the game, in part, because of MLB's recent rules change mandating that new pitchers face a minimum of three batters (or get a third out).
