Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya is a Theravada Buddhist temple located in Bahirawakanda, Kandy, Sri Lanka, about 2 km from the city center. Known for its towering 26.83 m (88.0 ft) Buddha statue, one of the tallest in Sri Lanka, it depicts Buddha in the Dhyana Mudra, symbolizing his first Enlightenment. The temple's land was donated by Minister of Lands Hector Kobbekaduwa in the early 1970s to Ven. Ampitiye Dammarama Thero of the Amarapura Nikaya. Despite initial opposition from senior monks of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, the temple was built after President Ranasinghe Premadasa intervened in the 1980s. The Buddha statue was completed in 1992 and inaugurated on January 1, 1993, by President Premadasa, and has since become a popular tourist destination.
