November 27, 1973. Bruce Lee's birthday. Four months after his death. He would have been 33.
Linda sits alone at the kitchen table. The children asleep. The house hollow quiet.
She picks up a pen. Starts writing.
Not to anyone. To Bruce.
"It's your birthday. I'm angry at you. I haven't been able to say that to anyone. They want me to be sad. Sad is acceptable. Anger is complicated. But I'm angry. You pushed too hard. I told you. The doctors told you. Your body told you. And you didn't stop."
She folds the letter. Puts it in an envelope. Puts it in a drawer.
The next year. November 27, 1974. She sits at the same table. Picks up a pen. Writes another letter.
She does this every year. For 30 years. Never tells anyone.
Year 3: She writes about forgiving him. The anger softer. More complicated.
Year 8: She writes about Brandon. "You would be proud of him. And worried. The way you were always both at once."
Year 20: She writes about fear. Watching Brandon pursue the same path. The same intensity. "I'm scared. I know what that intensity costs. I paid the bill once."
One year later Brandon was dead.
Year 21: "I don't have words. You took something when you left. And now the rest of it is gone too. How is this the story?"
Year 30: 2002. "I'm not angry anymore. Or not only angry. The anger is part of a larger thing now. Part of love. Part of thirty years of knowing someone and losing them and continuing to know them."
"Happy birthday, Bruce. Thirty years. I still make your favorite dinner."
The next year Shannon finds them. Going through old papers. Thirty envelopes in a desk drawer.
"What are these?"
"Letters to your father. One every birthday. For thirty years."
Shannon reads all thirty. Six hours. In order. From 1973 to 2002.
By the end she's moved somewhere past crying. Into something quieter. Something that doesn't have a name.
"She was angry and in love and grieving and rebuilding. Sometimes all at once. For thirty years she sat at a table and told the truth to someone who couldn't answer."

💔 She wrote him a letter every birthday for 30 years.
Never told anyone.
Never sent them.
Just kept telling the truth to someone who couldn't answer.
Because that's what love does when it has nowhere else to go.
It keeps going.
