Описание: The sudden demise of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has dealt a major blow to efforts to reunify the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Sources say both camps were preparing for a formal merger announcement on February 8, following district council poll results.

Merger talks had gained momentum after Ajit Pawar remarked in January that there are “no permanent enemies in politics.” Party insiders reveal that Pawar himself was expected to make a key announcement after the zilla parishad election results on February 7, with a joint meeting planned in Mumbai or Pune.

His death has now left a significant political vacuum in Maharashtra. Senior NCP leaders are reportedly urging Sunetra Pawar, Rajya Sabha MP and Ajit Pawar’s wife, to return to state politics and take charge of the party, possibly as Deputy Chief Minister. Others within the party want one of Pawar’s sons to contest the Baramati bypoll.

The unfolding developments have thrown the future of the NCP and its reunification plans into uncertainty.
