New Study Shows Violent Crime Down After Passing Constitutional Carry

In the wake of Ohio's adoption of the "constitutional carry" law on June 13, 2022, a recent study by the Center for Justice Research, in collaboration with the office of Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost and Bowling Green State University, sheds light on the positive impact it had on gun crime in the state.

This significant legislative change marked Ohio as the 23rd state to permit citizens to carry concealed weapons without a permit.

The study, conducted over the span of two years from June 2021 to June 2023, focused on the relationship between permitless carry and firearm-related crimes in Ohio's eight most populous cities.

The findings revealed a noteworthy decrease in gun-related crimes in six out of the eight cities, providing valuable insights into the efficacy of the constitutional carry law.

Director of the Center for Justice Research, Melissa Burek, Ph.D. in criminal justice, spearheaded the research efforts.

Contrary to concerns raised by mayors of large cities attributing increased crime to the change in state law, the study emphasizes that the constitutional carry law is not the root cause of the issue.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost underscored the importance of focusing efforts on addressing criminals responsible for gun violence rather than penalizing responsible Ohioans exercising their Second Amendment rights.

Specifically, the study highlighted significant decreases in firearm-related crimes in cities such as Akron, Columbus, and Toledo, as well as an overall reduction across all eight cities combined.

Parma experienced the most substantial decline, with a 22% decrease in gun crime, followed by Akron and Toledo, each witnessing an 18% drop.

While Dayton and Cincinnati saw modest increases of 6% and 5%, respectively, the overall trend showcased a positive impact of the constitutional carry law in reducing gun-related incidents in Ohio.
