Do you know these famous folk songs of Bihar?

If the essence of Bihar’s soil, the greenery of its fields, the exuberance of its festivals, and the joys and sorrows of life have been captured beautifully by anything, it is the region's folk songs. Since ancient times, folk songs have formed the backbone of Bihar's cultural heritage. There is hardly a corner or occasion in the state that remains untouched by music. From the joyful cries of a newborn to the tears of a bride's farewell, and from the sowing of seeds in the fields to the refreshing showers of the Sawan (monsoon) season—Bihar has a special melody for every moment. Let us step into the world of Bihar's famous folk songs, which continue to resonate in the hearts of every generation.

Sohar is a celebratory song marking the arrival of new life; whenever the sound of a newborn's cry echoes in a Bihari household, the Sohar is the first song to be sung. It is an immensely popular traditional song performed to mark the birth of a child. These songs often weave in the stories of the births of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna while invoking blessings for the health, prosperity, and longevity of the mother and the infant. Sung by women to the rhythmic beats of the dholak and manjira (cymbals), Sohar songs fill the home with an atmosphere of pure joy.

Wedding songs are often described as a flood of emotions, and a significant portion of Bihar's folk music is dedicated to weddings. From rituals like Tilak*, *Matkod*, *Haldi*, and *Parchhan to the Kohbar ceremony and the final Vidaai (farewell), every custom has its own unique song. In the Mithilanchal and Bhojpuri regions, these wedding songs vividly depict the nuptials of Lord Rama and Sita, as well as Shiva and Parvati. One such song is Samdaun*, a deeply moving farewell song from the Mithila region. When a daughter departs for her new home, the singing of *Samdaun fills the atmosphere with poignant emotion; it is said that the melody is so touching that it could melt even a heart of stone. ## Ritu Geet (Seasonal Songs): In Bihar, the changing of seasons is welcomed through song. Various types of folk songs are sung based on the seasons: for instance, Phagua (Holi songs), sung during the month of Phagun*, embodies mirth, exuberance, and a riot of colors; groups of men sing *Phagua with great gusto to the rhythmic beats of the Daph (tambourine) and Jhal (cymbals). Then there are Chaita and Ghato*; *Chaita is sung during the month of Chaitra when crops are harvested. Its lyrics are dominated by themes of love, separation, and romance, often concluding with the refrain "Ho Rama." Kajri is sung by women while swinging during the month of Sawan (monsoon), when the sky is overcast and a gentle drizzle falls; it is a unique musical expression of both the pain of separation and the joy of reunion.

Shram Geet (Work Songs)—*Ropni* and Sohni*: Melodies that relieve the fatigue of labor. Farmers and laborers here sing special songs—known as *Shram Geet*—to alleviate the weariness of working in the fields. *Ropni Geet (sung during paddy transplantation) and Sohni Geet (sung while weeding the fields) transform collective unity and hard labor into a musical celebration.

Songs of Valor—*Alha* and *Lorikayan*: There is a long-standing tradition among the men of Bihar of sharing tales of heroism through song. *Alha*—which recounts the battles of Alha and Udal—and *Lorikayan*—based on the valor of Lorik, a hero of the Ahir community—are steeped in the spirit of heroism (*Veer Ras*). Listening to them fills the audience with a renewed sense of zeal and vigor.
