So, I'm particularly pumped about today's post... Why? Because it's Q&A Tuesday baby!

Today's question comes from a passionate peep that goes by the name of Drew. 

And I'm especially excited to answer Drew's Q, because it's about a couple of topics that I struggled with for quite sometime:  

To niche or not to niche? 
To pick one passion or to pick many passions?

In other words: 

..is it best to pick just one passion to start a business with? 

..or is it better to build a business around all of my passions instead of limiting myself to just one.

..And how the hell do I do all of this anyway? 

Let's find out, shall we? Here's Drew's question: 
Q:  "Hi Dean.... Firstly, my brother and I have been following your blog for a few months now and we really appreciate everything you're doing out there -- can't wait for the book to come out either.  

...Over the last couple of months I've been struggling with trying to start a business with my passion(s).  Every major business book talks about how important it is to niche down. But I'm having a really tough time choosing between which passions to start a business with.  Do you have any thoughts on that? 
I'm really passionate about a lot of different things, but I don't know which passion to build a brand and business around..




...I love fitness, music, marketing, men's fashion, and more; but I just don't know which one of these passions I could actually turn into a successful business that makes me money.  

I've realized that choosing between passions is hard.  I know I need to decide but I'm having a lot of trouble. I'd really appreciate any tips or advice on the following questions:


Should I build my business around all of my passions (fitness, music, marketing, fashion, and more) at the same time?

OR
Should I pick one niche and build my brand or business with 1-2 passions around that niche? 

I know that I need to make a decision soon, because not deciding is killing me financially and I don't know what to do about it. Thanks for all of your help and inspiration."

Okay Drew, first and foremost -- I feel your pain brochacho! 

There are tons of folks - including myself - that are multi-passionate.  

This can get incredibly confusing, and if you don't get moving and do something about it, it will paralyze your progress... 

But have no fear, Dean Machine is here! [so cheesy]  

Anyways, let me share a few thoughts on how to go about this a little more strategically.  

I've got three huge strategies for you that will dramatically increase your ability to crush it with your passion -- personally AND professionally. Let's dive in.

First Tip: Your passion does not have to be just one big thing... But you do need to focus.

If you're multi-passionate, it's very likely that you'll feel some frustration when it comes to picking one of your passions to start a business with.  
After all, if you're really passionate about cooking and you're really passionate about cats also...




then you should be able to start a business with both; without one intruding on the success of the other, right? 

...Wrong. Read on junior, read on.

Let's begin with a little story
Did you know that lion-tamers still use old four-legged chairs to tame lions?  

Why? 
Because lions are biologically programmed to attack only one thing at a time.

Every time the lion-tamer shoves a chair in the lion's face, the lion sees four legs, and it literally paralyzes the lion's ability to focus and think -- therefore, preventing the lion from ever doing anything at all.. 

...sound familiar? 

So...is it important to niche down with your passion? Hell yes.  

Does that mean you can't pick another passion to focus on later? Absolutely not.


You can always broaden your portfolio and expand into other areas in the future -- but first, you've got to dominate one area.
