Modern Chess Set and Board Piece Rotation

Описание: I am proud to share the completion of my Chess Set Project ♟️: an opportunity for me to further challenge my SOLIDWORKS CAD modeling capabilities with advanced surface modeling techniques to create an aesthetic and useful product.

With this project, I am continuing to strengthen my computer modeling skills for engineering applications by exposing myself to more advanced modeling processes such as surface modeling to create products not easily attainable with standard design means. Notably, the knight piece was made possible due to these more complex surface tools. I began this project with multiple reference chess sets to form an idea for the overall style of the set, and choosing to implement a custom modern and sleek approach to the design with the use of spline geometry. Research was done to ensure the pieces were designed to standard size conventions. I modeled the playing board with an easy-to-assemble interlocking mechanism that allows for simple part manufacturing and increased portability. Each piece includes a cavity sized to fit determined specifications of ½ ounce worm weights to add additional mass and an improved feel to the playing experience. The pieces were then printed on an industrial Stratasys F170 printer in black and white ASA (acrylonitrile styrene acrylate) plastic, utilizing its high toughness and strength properties to maintain adequate robustness on a smaller scale.

Currently: I am enrolled in an Introduction to Mechanical Engineering course (ME 2011) at the University of Minnesota where I will learn more electronics skills with an Arduino and the Creo CAD software! Additionally, I am continuing to learn about varying materials and their properties in my Science of Engineering Materials with Laboratory course (MATS 2001).
