We've seen our fair share of terrible characters in the last ten years. But its come to my attention recently that the terrible characters we have seen have been written with multiple purposes in mind. And one of those purposes is to criticize.
Characters like Rey from Star Wars, Galadriel from Rings of Power and Helena Shaw from Indiana Jones have multiple functions in their stories but looking at them, its impossible not to hold them up against older heroes that they are playing opposite of.
In many ways, these characters are meant to criticize older, more established and frankly, better heroes through comparison and consequence.
In this video, we discuss just what it means when a character is created to criticize another character and why this process has never and will never work.
