Elderly parole law under fire after parole granted to man convicted of kidnapping, molesting kids

Описание: David Allen Funston, a Sacramento man convicted of kidnapping and molesting children, has been granted parole and is now cleared for release unless the state steps in, anchors report.

Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper held a press conference with a survivor and said victim statements from the original cases were too disturbing to share on air, the reporter said.

Cooper said Funston was convicted in 1999 of 16 counts of kidnapping and child molestation for crimes committed in Sacramento County in 1995 and 1996. A survivor identified only as Amelia spoke out and asked to remain off camera to protect her privacy.

The reporter says parole was granted after a Sept. 24, 2025 hearing and the decision was upheld last week. Officials say it is still unclear when or where Funston could be released.

Cooper says his office is urging the state to initiate a review under California’s Sexually Violent Predator Act, described as a civil process that could result in commitment to a state hospital instead of release. Anchors also say CDCR records show Funston remained incarcerated in Chino and no release date has been announced.
