Posting the four best-selling versions of “Some Enchanted Evening,” Rodgers & Hammerstein’s memorable ballad from their stage phenomenon “South Pacific:” Como, Crosby, Pinza & Stafford. Though Billboard showed the play’s stage lead Ezio Pinza as peaking at only #7 on the best-selling singles chart, that figure is misleading as it doesn’t reflect the million(s) of additional copies sold as part of Columbia’s wildly popular “South Pacific” original cast album (mostly 78 format initially, though it was also issued in the new 45 and LP formats). In an unprecedented (and never duplicated) occurrence, the collection topped the national album charts for 69 weeks out of the 400 (nearly eight years) that it spent listed.
