We are at the Spooners Tunnel, part of Nelson Tasman’s Great Taste Trail which is an extensive cycle loop taking in Nelson, Motueka, Wakefield, Richmond and Kaiteriteri. As the name suggests, there are plenty of food and wine stops on the way.
The 159-kilometre ride takes three to five days to comfortably complete, although most opt to take a day trip on a small section.
If you are a tourist in town, the easiest way to ride the trail is with local bike rental Kiwi Journeys. We chose the Tunnel to Town via Mapua trip, which is a 50km ride that is mostly flat. We opted for e-bikes, which was a saviour.
