In both Genesis 12 and Genesis 20, Abraham’s wife Sarah told the local king that she was only Abraham’s sister, not his wife. Again in Genesis 26, Abraham’s son Isaac faced the same dilemma with his wife Rebekah. This similar situation played out three different times, and each one can bring up perplexing questions. Did Abraham ask Sarah to lie about being his wife? Why would God allow for Sarah and Rebekah to be treated like that?

Looking closer at these passages and the book of Abraham can illuminate God’s care for Abraham, and God’s loyalty to the new and everlasting covenant, through which all the nations of the earth would be blessed. Far from being a simple pawn in a bid for Abraham’s life, Sarah served a critical role in introducing the gospel and God of Abraham to Pharoah and the Egyptians. Each time Abraham or Isaac departed from these encounters, they increased the size of their household and increased the sphere of God’s influence in Abraham’s world.

The reasons God gives certain commandments aren’t always clear in the moment. They can seem strange or counter intuitive. The Patriarchs and their wives were asked to make great personal sacrifices to obey God’s commandments. However, they later discovered that their unusual course of action opened the door for more of God’s children to know of His goodness. If we place our faith in God we can trust that His commandments always aim “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” (Moses 1:39).
