Why does it seem like some people find recovery and others struggle? Recovery is not a one-size-fits all solution; there is no quick fix. Chekesha battled opiod addiction for nine years rendering her deaf. A year after embarking on her path to recovery, she was confronted with an unexpected pregnancy, giving birth to her son prematurely at just 24 weeks, he weighed a mere 1 lb 10 oz. Recently celebrating 13 years of recovery, she recovers out loud every day and argues that asking for help is the first step in a lifelong journey. With faith the size of a mustard seed, she was delivered from a mountain of addiction and organized crime. Her son Hyuston, now 11, joins her on stage to inspire others on their own journeys of recovery. Kay is a Certified Peer and Founder of Chase No More Recovery Group, an organization that provides support, and community outreach to individuals suffering with substance use disorder. Her own recovery journey began 13 years ago after a nine-year addiction to prescribed opioids. She has a passion for helping others suffering with substance use disorder. Kay is the Author of A Life Of Kayos-My Opioid Journey through Hell Hope and Healing. Kay has been featured in print and broadcast media outlets including Google, YouTube, KYW News radio, Recovery Today Magazine, and Jersey's Best magazine. She has been a guest on Podcasts, including The Bubble Hour, The Numinous, Sober Curious, and Sober as a Mother. She is featured in an ABC documentary titled "Listen to the Silence, Women Trapped in the Opioid Epidemic." Kay lives in New Jersey with her son, who was born at 24 weeks and weighed one pound and ten ounces, now 11 years old. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
