Watch Shelby Brown create a breathtaking aquascape in a shallow 3-gallon tank using Aqua Natural’s Rose Glitter Rock, Flamingo substrate, and Sugar White sand. This video highlights the beauty of small tanks and demonstrates that size is no barrier to stunning aquascaping! Whether you're planning a plant-only setup or creating a habitat for nano fish or shrimp, this tutorial offers plenty of inspiration.
Step-by-Step Process:
Substrate Preparation (0:00 - 0:20):
Shelby begins by spreading Aqua Natural Flamingo substrate as the base layer. Its vibrant pink hue creates a strong foundation that beautifully complements the other elements while offering a stable bed for plants.
Rock Placement (0:21 - 0:40):
Shelby carefully positions large pieces of Aqua Natural Rose Glitter Rock, creating a dramatic, natural structure. The shimmering quartz accents in the rocks add depth and visual appeal to the aquascape.
Adding Sugar White Sand (0:41 - 1:10):
Midway through building the layout, Shelby introduces Aqua Natural Sugar White sand at 0:55. This fine, bright sand provides a striking contrast to the Flamingo substrate, adding visual texture and mimicking natural riverbeds. Smaller Flamingo rocks are also arranged as accents to enhance the tank's flow and balance.
Adjusting for Depth and Perspective (1:11 - 1:28):
Shelby sculpts the substrate and sand, creating gentle slopes that make the small tank feel larger. This careful contouring directs attention to the focal points, ensuring a natural and harmonious look.
Dryscaping for Precision (1:29 - 1:50):
Shelby works without water, a technique known as dryscaping, to position the rocks and substrate with precision. Dryscaping avoids disturbances caused by floating particles and allows for easier adjustments. Once satisfied with the layout, water can be slowly added using a bowl or plate to preserve the design.
Animals, Plants, and Other Ideas for a Small Tank:
This 3-gallon tank is perfect for:
Nano fish: Chili Rasboras or Ember Tetras.
Shrimp: Neocaridina or Caridina species.
Snails: Nerite snails or Malaysian trumpet snails.
Plant ideas include:
Foreground: Dwarf Hairgrass, Monte Carlo, or Marsilea.
Midground: Anubias nana petite, Cryptocoryne, or Bucephalandra.
Floating plants: Salvinia, Duckweed, or Frogbit.
This setup also works beautifully as a plant-only container, showcasing vibrant greenery and the natural beauty of Aqua Natural's hardscape materials.
