Solo travel during COVID is challenging but following all the government advice I flew up to northern Scotland to drive it’s most famous road - the NC500. A road trip around Northern Scotland is something I’d been wanting to do for a couple of years and the North Coast 500 route looked like a perfect introduction. The idea of a solo road trip made sense due to the pandemic, it would give me complete control over where I was going and allow me to maintain social distancing throughout most of the journey. Driving the tiny, winding roads was going to be a challenge though but I was looking forward to it!
The North Coast 500 is one of Scotland’s most iconic routes and the best place to see the raw beauty of the Highlands. Looping around Scotland’s northern coastline the route passes countless villages, beaches, castles, mountains and lochs - it’s without doubt a treasure trove of natural wonders and scenic viewpoints.
The North Coast 500 follows a number of small roads through desolate and barren landscapes, most of them single lane with passing places at regular intervals to ease the congestion. My trip there was different though, due to the pandemic the roads were quieter than usual and tourism for the first time in years was down.
My journey around the NC500 started in spectacular style with a walk around the small town of Dornoch and a tour of Dunrobin Castle. As you've probably guessed I decided to drive the route anti-clockwise.
Which way to drive the route was one of the big decisions I had to make early on - clockwise or anti-clockwise. After doing some research I figured the west coast looked even more spectacular than the east coast of Scotland so it would make more sense to drive that section last - leaving it for the main event so to speak!
Dornoch had plenty to offer including the magnificent Dornoch Cathedral (made internationally famous by Madonna in 2000) in the town centre, rows of pretty terraced housing and miles of beautiful sandy beaches close to one of the best golf courses in Scotland - the Royal Dornoch.
A few miles up the coast sits one of the Highlands most recognisable landmarks - Dunrobin Castle. Its appearance is similar to a French Château and it occupies a beautiful spot overlooking the sea. Outside the castle I was able to explore the gardens on a lovely late Summer's day, it’s a wonderful place and definitely worth a visit.
