The Boone County Prosecutor has filed one count of voluntary manslaughter, a Level 2 felony, in the fatal shooting of 32-year-old cleaning worker María Florinda Ríos Pérez De Velásquez. Pérez was shot after arriving at the wrong home in the Heritage subdivision in Whitestown on Nov. 5.
Police said Pérez worked for a cleaning crew and had the wrong address. Officers responding to a possible home invasion call found her shot on the front porch. Her husband witnessed the shooting. Pérez leaves behind four children.
The prosecutor previously said Indiana’s Stand Your Ground law made the case complex and required careful review before charges could be filed. Today’s update confirms a voluntary manslaughter charge.
