As the glory days of capitalism become ever more simply a memory, Marxism has made a significant re-emergence in the last decade as the predominant ideology that would stand to oppose the decay of late-capitalism. Naturally, this can make it difficult to get to the core of exactly what Marxism is for newcomers, on account of the abundance of differing tendencies that seem to oppose each other. Orthodox Marxism, Marxism-Leninism, Humanist Marxism, even Hoxhaism or Maoism; whatever could they mean?
Perhaps so many questions can’t be answered in one session but the texts we’ll be reading will certainly provide a strong introduction to the core concepts of Marxism. One is Huey Newton’s Revolutionary Intercommunalism, a speech given to Boston College that sets out the fundamental belief system of the Black Panther Party and Newton’s conception of Intercommunalism. The other is The Part Played by Labour in the Transition from Ape to Man by Friedrich Engels, a very good outline of Dialectical Materialism and how Marxism draws from the fundamental material experience of man throughout history.
This workshop was intended for people of all levels of familiarity with Marxism. Readings were encouraged but not expected.

The Radical Education Week Series is a project by students for students.
Students have felt for decades that our university system is failing us. Hierarchical divisions between students and staff, management continually eroding the real heart of the university, the burden of a profit-driven tertiary education, and the individualistic, competitive culture of modern uni all make life as a student increasingly difficult. University is no longer a place of learning, but a degree factory.
Radical Education Week is one effort in a history of resistance of students coming together to fight these trends and experiment with out education in creative and collaborative ways. We envision a space where learning is flexible, responsive, inspiring, and ultimately, liberatory.

Radical Education Week is an online series which has been organised across a number of Indigenous nations, but is centered around Gadigal land upon which The University of Sydney sits. Sovereignty was never ceded and this land was, is and always will be Aboriginal land. We acknowledge that Indigenous resistance, learning, celebrations, and knowledge practices have been taking place on this land for tens of thousands of years and endure today.
