BIRKIN: Selby Parish #6 of 74

Описание: The rich arable farmland to the East of Knottingley has always been a lifeline for the people of the villages that are dotted around it. The River Aire plays a part in that too, providing the farms with water for irrigation. Sometimes though, that very water can cause an issue when it floods. In this village, flooding isn't a one in a blue moon kind of thing, here it's quite a regular occurance.

Not that it ever causes much damage. In fact in the year 2000, that was the last time that anyone here or in the neighbouring village had to be evacuated because of the level of water in the Aire. Mostly, if the river is going to burs, it bursts onto the farmland, but it can cause some major problems for traffic!

Flooding aside, this is a lovely little place in all honesty. The church of St Mary towers above one of the farms in the village, and despite there being n other real amenities here like a pub or a shop, if you live out here you are certainly living in one of the much more desirable rural locations in the entire District of Selby.

There's a tea room at the fisheries, plenty of old buildings dating from way back when, and this village is the birthplace of T H Green, a famous philosopher, not to mention it's also been featured in the Tour de Yorkshire as it passed through in 2016 from Otley to Doncaster.

Not big, but certainly interesting, this is the land of the birch trees. This is BIRKIN.
