Plywood is classified as break bulk cargo and is usually transported by general cargo ships or multipurpose vessels. Break bulk shipping involves risks such as multiple loading and unloading operations, on-hold or on-deck stowage, as well as maritime turbulence and humidity variations during the voyage.
Packing Requirements (Seaworthy Packing)
1.Plywood must be bundled into standard bundles using steel strapping or lashing belts of sufficient strength. The connections of the strapping shall be firm to prevent board dislocation or edge damage caused by loosening during transportation.
2.Protection of Ends and Corners
The ends and top of the bundles shall be covered with wooden battens, corner protectors or additional protective boards with a length sufficient to cover the entire end face, so as to prevent corner damage during forklift handling or hoisting operations.
3.Moisture-proof Measures
Plywood is susceptible to moisture absorption, which may lead to staining, deformation or delamination. The bundles must be completely wrapped with waterproof plastic film or moisture-proof covers.
4.Skids/Dunnage
Each bundle shall be equipped with solid wooden skids at the bottom to facilitate forklift insertion.
