In this video, I go over 5 things that I had to learn the hard way about getting into the fountain pen hobby and collecting.
I go over that fountain pens take a lot of trial and error. There is a learning curve that you need to invest time into to get used to how to hold and maintain the pen’s performance.
The next thing is that the fountain pen hobby is an ecosystem of different items. When you write with a fountain pen, you notice that you want it to be smoother and more reliable, so now you buy fancy paper or notebooks. Next, you want to experiment with different inks and colors. So you need to buy a converter for the ink and the ink itself. The. You need to clean the pen and so on and so forth.
The next thing is that fountain pens need some maintenance and fine-tuning. They are not something you can pick up once every month and it works. There is cleaning and maintenance that has to be done. Also, there can be issues with the pen’s nib. So there can be a need to align the tines of the nib to get reliable, consistent, and smooth ink flow.
The fourth thing I learned is that a more expensive fountain pen doesn’t necessarily mean a better or more reliable writing experience. Spending more money can have some positives to it. Materials, finishing, and technology can improve the higher you go up the price range. However, spending money to say “this is nicer, so I am more of a collector and this will write nicer.” Isn’t always the case.
Lastly and most importantly, is that fountain pens are all about the experience and expression of writing. The adventure and self-discovery of putting your thoughts, your style, your potential on that paper. The importance to develop one’s craft of thinking and writing and penmanship.
