During the 1946 Tokyo war crimes trials, one man stole the headlines with a bizarre act of defiance. Shūmei Ōkawa, a prominent nationalist, was filmed leaning forward and repeatedly slapping the bald head of former Prime Minister Hideki Tōjō. While Tōjō laughed it off, Ōkawa continued his strange behavior, including praying loudly in German. While many saw it as a breakdown, others believed it was a calculated performance. The strategy if it was one worked: Ōkawa was declared mentally unfit for trial and sent to a psychiatric ward, while seven of his co-defendants, including Tōjō, were sentenced to the ultimate penalty. He was eventually released, leaving historians to wonder if he was truly ill or just a master of survival.
