I’m sure some of you have seen the comments criticizing me for teaching ASL as a hearing person. I want to address this and share the reasons why I do it:

1️⃣ASL should be accessible and widely used everywhere. We need to encourage more people to learn ASL, and to do that we need many skilled teachers to choose from. We also need variety in teaching styles to fit the needs of different students.

2️⃣ASL is the language of the Deaf Community, but it is also used by many other groups of people. The signing community includes people with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Sensory Disorders, Speech disorders, Down Syndrome, brain trauma, Auditory Processing disorders, Mutism, and many others.

3️⃣As a former Teacher of the Deaf and interpreter I have first-hand experience as an ASL language-learner. Often it is helpful to learn from someone who has gone through the process themselves.
I’m proud to teach ASL and share my passion with others. Ultimately, you should choose the teacher that best fits your needs.
