On Thursday, Donald Trump quietly cleared out the entire U.S. Election Assistance Commission, the bipartisan federal agency that helps states and counties actually run their elections. Here’s what the EAC does: it certifies voting equipment, maintains the national voter registration form, distributes federal election funding, and gives guidance to local election officials. It was created after the disputed 2000 election specifically so elections would run more smoothly, and it’s designed to be evenly split between the parties. Trump fired the two Democratic commissioners by email and pushed the lone Republican to resign, leaving the agency with zero members. With no quorum, it legally cannot act.

Why does that matter? Because election-law experts are warning that an empty commission is one Trump can try to exploit, for instance by forcing through a proof-of-citizenship requirement on the federal voter registration form that courts already blocked him from imposing. And he’s able to do all of this now because of a recent Supreme Court ruling that dramatically expanded a president’s power to fire the leaders of independent agencies. He can’t unilaterally install replacements (those still need Senate confirmation), but he can leave the agency crippled during an election year.

So no, this one isn’t sexy. It’s just genuinely dangerous. Call your representatives, and tell everyone you know. 🇺🇸
